Our Story
Rudi Maeyer is South African, and moved to Berlin in 2014 with his family. He has been working with wood for 30 years. His love of woodworking began when he came across a pile of forgotten wooden beams at a derelict part of a university where he was working as an engineer. The creative process of turning those beams into a table gave him so much pleasure that he has never looked back.
South Africa has a naturally dry climate, and drought is an ever increasing threat, especially with the effects of global warming becoming ever more evident. This means that indigenous trees grow very slowly. To compound the problem, there are a great number of ‘alien’ trees that thrive under these conditions, by robbing the available ground water for themselves. One would think that this is not an ideal situation for wood workers. An ideal solution: Handmade solid wood furniture made from trees that need to be cut down anyway. These include Jacaranda and Acacia and Eucalyptus wood.
Having arrived in Germany, he realised that the trees, the people, the style and the working conditions are very different. He found all these circumstances inspiring and found that no matter how different things were, the basic principles still held true: most people love a beautifully crafted piece of furniture, tailor made just for them.
What is important to us:
- Making furniture is our passion, and if possible would love our pieces to be handed down from generation to generation.
- We never use wood from the rainforest or trees that are threatening to become extinct.
- We craft furniture from solid woods such as Maple, Cherry, Beech or similar bearing the FSC seal, or from recycled solid wood, which means that instead of ending up in an incinerator, this wood gets a chance to give somebody pleasure for years to come.
- We feel that good communication with our customers is important, so that they will be as pleased as we are with the final result.
- We are trying to get away from the modern throwaway mentality and strive to produce top quality unique items.
